Here are a few pictures from our past experiences
Participants spent a day learning about Leadership and Emotional Intelligence. We were teaching the participants how to understand and manage their emotions, while also developing empathy and social skills to work with others.
This experience taught the participants about the Ethiopian community and communal eating. It was the first time any of the girls had eaten this food. We were excited to learn they enjoyed it and asked for more.
Our fabulous artist Neha Assar, introduced Henna and its importance to the Indian community as well as other cultures. We learned about it's use as decoration in celebrations but also as a form of cooling the skin.
The participants were dressed in authentic Japanese kimonos by Akane of LA Kimono Club. Who knew there was so many layers to wearing a kimono. She taught the girls so much history behind kimonos and the differences in their styles. Our participants have a new appreciation for and understanding of this beautiful garment.
A visit to the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute afforded the girls an opportunity to learn and experience the art of Japanese drumming, kumi-daiko. They followed their Sensei's instruction and had a great time.
Participants from the Compton G.irls Club and Inglewood Girl ScoutsTroop 3915 joined together and learned the art of tamale making from Tamaleria La Dona in Compton. The owner and ladies working showed the girls how to make masa, and fill over 400 tamales with cheese and chicken. They also learned what it takes to run a small, minority and woman-owned business.
